This is a bill that declares that New Hampshire shall not give legal effect to laws or
judicial proceedings of other states which recognize relationships between members of
the same sex as marriages or the legal equivalent of marriages.
In light of the progress being made in Massachusetts, where the state supreme court has
recognized that gays should be entitled to the full benefits and obligations of civil marriage,
this legislation, in my opinion, is a hate crime (those are my (Suzy Colt’s) words only).
Since NOW is dedicated to ending discrimination against people based on sexual orientation,
this is a high priority for us. We must stem the tide of hate and discrimination. We must
defeat all efforts, State and Federal, to codify the discriminatory definition of marriage
as a union between a man and a woman. The Constitution and the laws should not be used as
tools to discriminate. The Constitution and laws should embrace equal opportunity and justice
for all, not just straight people.
Contact your local representatives and Senator, and your federal legislators as well and
say no to legalizing discrimination.
