March 08, 2004 International Women's Day - established 1908, in part to address
child labor issues; please help commemorate by addressing the labor issue
of the NH minimum wage !
Please pass this information to everyone you know and please try to make it
to the hearing - showing our numbers, gay and non-gay is extremely important!
What: HB1278 relative to the minimum wage When: House votes on Thursday March 11, 2004
Action needed: phone calls to this list of Representatives - even if this
list does not include YOUR Representative, as a member of the NHWL you are entitled
to speak on behalf of our issues to any Representative to the General Court.
MESSAGE to the Representatives:
The current minimum wage is $5.15. It hasnıt changed since 1997, although the costs of
housing, utilities and health care certainly have, and it is having a direct effect on
your constituents. It is the large retail chains, not the majority of NH owned businesses,
who are paying the minimum wage and forcing wage earners to seek assistance at local
welfare offices, which as you know is funded by the local property tax.
We are asking for your support of HB1278 with its floor amendment - the Labor committee
voted 10-9 to kill the bill, however the floor amendment offers a compromise: it raises
the minimum wage one time, to $6 per hour, and it establishes a study committee to examine
issues relative to the minimum wage.
The bill is in your House calendar, with the amendment, and it will be voted on this
Thursday, March 11... This is a very important issue for the Womenıs Lobby, so I hope
we may we count on your support.
